The four black hoppers first out in the train will be set off at Tionesta for pumice loading. BN 2544 was originally CB&Q 998, as evidenced by the nose headlight. Description:  BN train 138 returns to Klamath Falls with the UP interchange traffic from Bieber. During 1984-85, traffic on this part of the Inside Gateway consisted of one train a day operated as a turn out of Klamath Falls, 137 southbound and 138 northbound, usually with the trio of GP39-2s seen here. Thankfully for us foamers, it usually ran in the daytime. BN 2708 was later BNSF 2708. Date of photo approximate.

Description:  Two GP39-2s and three GP35s hustle what is probably BN train 694 northbound through Kirk via trackage rights over SP's Cascade sub. Kirk was for about 12 years from 1911-1923 the "end of the line" while various legal complications interfered with completion of the Natron Cutoff. Five different logging railroads interchanged with SP here at one time, and evidence of extensive clear-cutting is still visible on the surrounding landscape. Date of photo approximate.
